The William Olsen Award


This scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be transferring to a four-year institution in the Fall with the possible goal of teaching mathematics.

Requirements

  1. Student will be transferring to a four-year institution in the Fall
  2. A GPA of at least 3.0 at PCC
  3. A GPA of at least 3.0 in all mathematics courses taken at PCC
  4. Completion of Math 5A, 5B, and 5C with a grade of at least a B in each course.
  5. Submit an autobiography with a potential career goal of teaching mathematics.

The William Miller Award


History

William Curt Miller was an archaeologist and astronomer and, above all, a humanitarian who resided in Pasadena.  His wish was to help needy students who were gifted in the field of science pursue their education through college and graduate school.

The Award

These monetary awards, will be given to students who will be returning to PCC as full-time students in the fall. These students have shown excellence this far in the area of mathematics and show promise for their future studies in mathematics.

Requirements

  1. Student will be returning to PCC as a full-time student in the Fall
  2. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 in all courses completed at PCC
  3. A GPA of at least 3.5 in a minimum of nine (9) mathematics units
  4. Submit an autobiography that includes future academic and career aspirations

Juei-Jen Chang and Nien Li-Ching Chang


History

Juei-Jen and Nien Li-Ching Chang are from Taiwan and have a daughter devoting herself to education. They wish to honor students who are gifted and passionate in mathematics or computer science, and will pursue their education through college and graduate school.

The Award

These monetary awards will be given to students who will be transferring to a four-year institution in the Fall. These students have shown excellence in the area of mathematics or computer science and show promise for their future studies in mathematics or computer science.

Requirements

  1. Students must be receiving the BOG wavier.
  2. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 units and have completed at least 24 units; so attach a transcript to verify this (unofficial is acceptable).
  3. Submit an autobiography that includes future academic and career aspirations.
  4. Student will be transferring to a four-year institution in the Fall
  5. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 in all courses completed at PCC
  6. A GPA of at least 3.0 in a minimum of nine (9) mathematics units
  7. Completion of Math 5A and 5B with a grade of at least a B in each course

Thomas Y. Hou and Yu-Chung Chang-Hou


History

Thomas Y. Hou is the Charles Lee Powell Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics at Caltech and Yu-Chung Chang-Hou is a Mathematics Professor at PCC. They would like to honor students who are gifted and passionate in mathematics and computer science, and will pursue their education through college and graduate school.

The Award

These monetary awards will be given to students who will be returning to PCC as full-time students in the Fall. These students have shown excellence this far in the area of mathematics or computer science and show promise for their future studies in mathematics or computer science.

Honors in Mathematics Award


This award is a certificate in recognition of those students earning an A grade upon first attempt in each of our upper division math courses, Math 5A, 5B, 5C, Math 10 and Math 55.  The Honors in Mathematics is a monetary award.

Note: Students matriculating into PCC at the Math 5B level are also eligible for the award.  Students currently enrolled in Math 10 or 55 this spring semester will receive their award after successfully completing those courses with an A grade.


The Edna Plummer Scholarship Award


History  

Edna Plummer was a former mathematics professor at P.C.C.  Her purpose was to make an annual award to an outstanding student in the Mathematics Division at P.C.C.  This scholarship was first awarded in 1965.  The Edna Plummer Award is a monetary award.  Students are nominated by faculty for this award.

Requirements

  1. This student has shown special ability in the study of mathematics.
  2. This student has shown such character traits as: Integrity, Honesty, Industry, Sincerity of Purpose
  3. This student shall have satisfactory over-all scholarship at P.C.C.
  4. This student will be transferring to a four-year institution this fall.

Outstanding Achievement in AMATYC Contest


The American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) national contest consists of two one-hour exams; one given in the fall and one given in the spring.

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition


This contest, widely considered to be the most prestigious university-level mathematics competition in the world, takes place in two three-hour sittings on a Saturday, where students attempt to solve 12 problems.

Pi Day Student Conference


These certificates go to students who contributed to the organization and presentation of this year’s Pi Day Student Conference.
