Which is the best English 1A class for me?
English 1A is the transfer-level writing course required to graduate or transfer. To help you complete college-level English or English 1A, Pasadena City College will offer three paths beginning in Spring 2021. These paths are:
English 1A
(4 units, 4.5 hrs/wk)
This path is for you if ANY of the following applies:
- You have a high school GPA of 2.6 or higher.
- You were successful in previous writing courses.
- You have some practice with reading challenging articles and books.
- You previously learned about creating a thesis and supporting it with body paragraphs.
- You are ready to learn about research methods early on in this course
- You have some knowledge of the writing process, and you want to learn more.
- You want to learn about resources available to you on campus to support your writing practice.
English 1A + English 150
(4 units + .5 nontransferable units, 6.5 hours/wk)
This path is for you if ANY of the following applies:
- You have a high school GPA of 1.90-2.59 (recommended).
- You have a high school GPA below 1.90 (strongly recommended).
- It took you several tries to pass previous writing courses.
- You want to maximize your time by getting a head start on your homework and assignments.
- You want to work on assignments with the guidance of your English 1A instructor.
- You could use more practice with reading, writing, and/or research.
- If you study in our English as Second Language program, you finished ESL 33B confidently and want to challenge yourself in a supportive community.
- You want to learn strategies to succeed in college.
- You want guidance on finding resources on campus to support your writing practice.
English 1A for ESL Students
(4 units, 4.5 hrs/wk)
This path is for you if ANY of the following applies:
- You completed ESL 33B.
- You want to learn from an ESL instructor who understands how to help you with language acquisition in English 1A assignments.
- You want to improve your academic reading, writing, and research skills while improving your cultural understanding.
- You need extra help with English grammar.
- You need extra help with reading challenging English textbooks and/or Literature.
- You need extra help with writing academic essays having a variety of structures.
- You need extra help with writing an MLA research paper.
- You think your English language skills need more improvement.
- You need extra help with college-level English vocabulary.
