Noncredit ESL
The Noncredit English as a Second Language program is for students whose first language is not English. Our courses will help you learn to read, write, and speak in English and be ready to find a job or transition to the credit ESL classes. During our program, you will take courses in conversation, advanced listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar. All classes are offered at beginning through advanced levels and are designed to increase your opportunities for successful employment and academic achievement.

ESL Program Details
In the Noncredit ESL Program you can choose to take individual courses in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Or, you can choose to follow a course sequence to earn a certificate of competence. Your counselor at the Noncredit division can help you decide which path is best for you.
Noncredit ESL Program Certificates
Level
Low to high literacy
Skills Taught
The Literacy level introduces basic English components such as the:
- English alphabet and numbers
- Basic grammatical functions
- Pronunciation
- Production of short and simple phrases
Required Courses
- ESLN 1060A – English as a Second Language, Literacy Level A
- ESLN 1060B – English as a Second Language, Literacy Level B
Program Completion
After you complete the required courses, you will earn a certificate of competence and be prepared to begin the ESL Level 1 program.

Low Beginning Students
Skills Taught
- Participate in simple conversations
- Complete basic forms
- Write simple sentences.
Required Courses
- ESLN 1061A – English as a Second Language, Level 1A ESLN 1061B – English as a Second Language, Level 1B
- This program prepares your for the ESL Level 2 Program.
Program Completion
After you complete the required courses, you will earn a certificate of competence and be prepared to begin the ESL Level 2 program.

Low beginning to high beginning students
Skills Taught
Level 2 teaches you simple oral and written communication form such as:
- Listening for specific information
- Writing simple paragraphs
- Asking clarifying questions

- ESLN 1062B – English as a Second Language, Level 2B
Program Completion
After you complete the required courses, you will earn a certificate of competence and be prepared to begin the ESL Level 3 program.

Level 3 introduces complex language functions such as:
- Identifying problems and discussing solutions
- Writing a descriptive paragraph
- Using comprehensive language to fulfill tasks

Level 4 helps you develop extended oral fluency and written competency beyond that of personal experiences to global situations.

Level 5 teaches you to organize and use correct grammatical functions in oral and written communication in academic, work and life situations.
