Reduced Course Load (RCL)
Source: Title 8 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 214.2(f)(6)(iii)-(iv)
If you are having initial academic difficulties, a temporary illness or a medical condition, or need fewer than a full course load (12 units) in your last term to complete your program of study, you may qualify for a reduced course load (RCL). Below are the situations where an RCL is allowed:
Please remember: A student who drops below a full course of study (12 units) without prior approval from the International Student Center is out of status. ISC will subsequently terminate your I-20. Students who are out of status cannot study or stay in the U.S. legally and have lost all benefits associated with their F-1 visa.
*A teacher drop is not considered approved unless the student received prior approval from ISC.
