We offer a variety of courses covering the three major branches of linguistics: general, applied, and theoretical. From fulfilling a general education requirement to pursuing a degree in linguistics, our courses are transferable and will give you a strong foundation in the study of language and language behavior.

Please remember, the courses that universities and colleges require for transfer vary. When selecting courses, talk with your counselor to determine the specific requirements for the university you plan to transfer to.

For all linguistics courses, you must be English 1A eligible.

We offer a variety of linguistics courses each semester. Use the links below to see full course descriptions and the current schedule of classes.

Linguistics is a field of study that connects to many other disciplines: it is both a social science and an art. Because of this, a number of linguistics courses are cross-listed. Cross-listed is a term for a class that can be used to fulfill a requirement from two different divisions. It is the same course, but when registering, you choose which department you would like to take it under.

Cross-listed courses include:

  • LING 10 / ENG 10 - Introduction to Linguistics
  • LING 11 / ENG 11 - History of English Language
  • LING 12 / ENG 12 - Intercultural Communication
