FAQs

Accommodations depend on your situation but may include:

  • Ergonomic equipment (e.g., chair, keyboard, footrest)
  • Schedule adjustments (flexible hours, reduced schedule, breaks)
  • Job modifications (adjusting non-essential duties)
  • Assistive technology or specialized tools

The focus is on what enables you to perform your essential job functions.

Once we’re aware that you may need an accommodation, we begin the interactive process under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Fair Employment and Housing Act. This involves communication between you, your medical provider (if needed), and your supervisor. Risk Management will guide the process to understand your needs and explore reasonable accommodation options.

In many cases, yes. We may ask your medical provider to confirm your limitations and any work-related restrictions. This helps us identify accommodations that allow you to perform your essential job functions safely and effectively.

Not necessarily. The interactive process is about finding a reasonable accommodation that works for both you and the District. We’ll consider your request, but we may offer alternative options that are effective and appropriate for the job.

The process is managed by Risk Management and includes input from you, your supervisor, and—if applicable—your medical provider. The goal is a collaborative discussion to identify a workable solution that supports your ability to perform your job.
