LGBTQIA+ Protections

Pasadena City College is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning and working environment for all LGBTQIA+ members of our community, and has a variety of supports available.  Further, the U.S. Department of Education has affirmed that Title IX’s protections against sex discrimination includes protections for individuals against discrimination based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. Both the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Education have stated that transgender students must be treated in accordance with the student’s gender identity for all purposes. In addition to Title IX, Title VII, as well as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission provide protections to LGBTQIA+ students and employees, affording them the rights to:

  • Use locker rooms and restrooms consistent with a student’s or employee’s gender identity
  • Be placed in campus housing according to their gender identity
  • Not be discriminated against, disciplined, or treated differently on the basis of their gender identity or sexual orientation
  • Not be compelled to provide personal and medical information to college officials, and college officials must not disclose personal information about a transgender student or employee (e.g. sex assigned at birth, medical history, gender identity, or gender transition) without their consent
  • Amend student educational records to reflect legal documents, if the records are inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the student’s rights of privacy, according to FERPA

File A Report

PCC recognizes that harassment, exclusion from school activities, and other forms of discrimination can interfere with LGBTQ+ students’ access to a safe and inclusive school environment. Further, Title IX federal law protections include prohibitions against discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Federally funded educational institutions are required to ensure that LGBTQ+ students have equal access to all aspects of a school’s programs and activities.

Staff, students, or faculty who believe that they have experienced discrimination or harassment against them because they identify as LGBTQIA+, or on the basis of their gender identity or sex, can file a complaint with the college's Title IX Coordinator by phone, email, mail, in person, or via the online report form.
