Our goal as a PCC tutoring service is to create a welcoming and accepting environment that supports students in becoming independent learners. Tutors are trained to become CRLA (College Reading & Learning Association) certified and use CRLA-approved methods of tutorial facilitation. A tutorial is a two-directional process in which both tutor and student participate.

Tutors expect that you will…

  • Come prepared with all necessary materials (i.e., class notes, assignment guidelines, textbooks, writing drafts, flash drive, calculator, etc.).
  • Have already viewed the instructor's notes and/or lecture videos.
  • Be an active participant in the tutoring session.
  • Be as specific as possible about what you are hoping to achieve in the tutoring session. Ask questions and listen to suggestions.
  • Attempt your homework on your own before bringing it to a tutor to help; a tutor cannot do your work for you or teach you material.
  • Be patient and considerate as we continue to operate in a virtual and physical environment. Make sure to email us at successcenters@pasadena.edu if you have any problems making an appointment or accessing the virtual Tutoring Lobby.

Students can expect that tutors will…

  • Be punctual, supportive, and professional
  • Answer questions to the best of their abilities
  • Work WITH you but not FOR you
  • Be knowledgeable about other available resources to assist you
  • Set clear expectations about the session and encourage you to be an independent learner
  • Offer a positive attitude and be respectful of your diverse perspective and learning style
  • Provide useful comments and suggestions to help foster independent learning.
  • Do NOT try to predict what your grade will be on your assignments and cannot speak for your instructor. Please ask your instructor for any clarification on any course-related questions (assignments, lectures, grades, etc.)

Note: (1) During times of high volume of students, drop-in tutoring sessions will be at most 30 minutes. After which, tutees will be encouraged to use tutors’ suggested strategies to work on their own and rejoin the waitlist if more questions arise. (2) Back-to-back appointments will not be allowed. You must wait at least 15 minutes from the end of your session before getting back onto the waitlist. (3) Tutors also have the right to end any session if they feel the environment is no longer conducive to learning.
