Emergency Medical Responder
The Emergency Medical Responder Course is designed to prepare you for certification as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in the state of California. It is a rigorous course with an overall focus on the pre-hospital phase of emergency care.

Emergency Medical Responder course consists of one EMED 201 course (total 3 units). (EMED 201) course is offered during the fall, spring, and summer sessions.
Course Preparation: Before registering for the course, you are required to have a valid AHA CPR/Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Card. However, we do offer HLTN 1000 course where you can obtain your CPR card.
Applicants must be 16 years or older. EMT courses require anyone assisting with the provision of emergency care to be 16 years or older. In order to successfully complete the EMED course, you must complete the course with a Minimum grade of B or better.
Course Description: Preparation of first responders for immediate lifesaving care to critical patients. Training of lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and to assist higher level personnel at the scene. A grade of B or better must be achieved to receive a certificate of course completion for EMR. The EMR course meets and exceeds the 2021 National EMS Education Standards for EMR training. This is the first level of EMS provider, as recommended by the National Scope of Practice Model for EMS, providing basic life support. Total of 36 hours of lecture and 54 hours of laboratory.
Course Requirements and Supplies: You will be responsible for submitting a health questionnaire and obtaining our textbooks, syllabus packet, uniform and required equipment.
Estimated Program Costs: The total estimated cost is $303.00. Prices are subject to change.
- PCC Registration fee for 3 units = $138.00 (based on California Resident fee of 46.00 per unit)
- Textbook = 100.00 - 150.00. Used textbooks are acceptable to purchase.
- Skills Guide = 15.00 at the PCC Bookstore. It is also available electronically as a PDF file at no charge to the enrolled student.
Program Completion: This course does not lead to certification or licensure.
There are no additional application requirements for the EMR Course. Just complete the application and enrollment steps to attend PCC, and register for EMED 201.
