About the Exhibit

This tandem solo exhibition pairs the quirky, cobbled sculptures of Kyla Hansen with the similarly unexpected juxtapositions inherent in the ceramic, sculptural works of Alison Petty Ragguette. Ragguette oddly combines elements of organic, bodily shapes comingled with mundane functional objects such as faucet plumbing fixtures cast in various interplays of porcelain and silicone rubber, drizzled with a sweetly sticky glaze. The resulting objects have a confounding graceful elegance despite contradicting allusions to gross innerds. Kyla Hansen rescues abject found materials and with McGyver-like plucky DYI ingenuity conjoins these discards with glittering, polyurethane faux nature allusions. Through her magical utilitarian wizardry she yokes these cast-off misfits, these decrepit Frankensteins into oddly cheerful, makeshift wonders.

Biography

Kayle Hansen

Kyla Hansen (MFA 2012 Claremont Graduate University; BFA 2009 University of Nevada, Las Vegas) Kyla recently had a solo exhibition in Emma Gray’s Five Car Garage gallery in Santa Monica. In 2015, French curator René-Julien Praz selected Hansen’s work for a group show of Los Angeles artists for the exhibition space PIASA in Paris, France. She has participated in numerous group shows at Los Angeles venues such as the New Wight Gallery at UCLA, Western Projects and Torrance Art Museum. She received a Montello Foundation Artist Residency in 2015. She teaches at Glendale Community College.

Alison Ragguette

Alison Ragguette (MFA California College of the Arts, San Francisco; BFA Concordia University, Montreal) has developed an expansive approach to making sculptural objects in porcelain, glass, and rubber over the past fifteen years. She recently had a solo show at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona), a group show at Couturier Gallery (Los Angeles) and has a national and international exhibition record. She has been a resident artist at the Taller Cultural in Santiago de Cuba, Jingdehzen Pottery Workshop in China, and the Purosil Rubber Company in Corona, California. Alison has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, and the Durfee Foundation in Los Angeles. She teaches at California State University, San Bernardino.
