Course Offerings

Participants must enroll in one French language class and French 010 for a total of 8 units.

Course No. Course Name Units
FRNC 001, 002, 003, 004 (select one) Elementary & Intermediate Levels 5
FRNC 010 French Civilization   3

* All non-language classes are taught in English
* All courses are CSU/UC transferable* Honors Program credit for those who qualify

FRNC 001 through 004 Elementary or Intermediate French: The purpose of these courses is to enable students to develop skills in understanding and speaking everyday French in different common situations; to read and write with accuracy using correct grammatical points; to learn about France, its history and its culture. The language instruction is a central part of the students' experience in Paris, and learning the language is an integral part of exposing oneself to that culture. Language and culture are inextricably intertwined and at the end of the trip, students not only will have improved their knowledge of the French language, but they will also have acquired a greater appreciation for French culture. There is no better way to learn a language than in the target country.

FRNC 010 French Civilization: This course, taught in English, is an overview of French customs, language, literature, geography, arts and sciences. In this study abroad course, we will make Paris our focus and, through the study of key sites, we will explore today’s French society and ask how France remembers its past. What is remembered? What is forgotten? What traces of this past are still present and how can we uncover them? We will pay particularly close attention to both the events of World War II in occupied Paris and France’s colonial past and explore what traces these historical moments has left on the city itself to this day. Places do have stories to tell and we will learn about the past through the prism of places – buildings, streets, apartments, monuments, neighborhoods... As silent witnesses of the passage of time and historical events, places conjure up individual memories and contribute to the constitution of a collective memory.

Program Faculty

Professor Emilie Garrigou-Kempton, languages

Emilie Garrigou-Kempton was born in Bordeaux, France, and raised in the wine country just outside the city. She earned a BS and a MA in philosophy at the University of Bordeaux and first came to California as an exchange student. She worked for several NGOs in the field of international development before returning to school to obtain her PhD in French and Francophone Studies at USC. Since then, she has taught at USC, Scripps College, and Pomona College.

She is very interested in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and her own academic interests are very much interdisciplinary. She has conducted research in the field of medical humanities, gender studies, and visual culture. She is currently working on a project in the field of Holocaust and memory studies which focuses on a corpus of memoirs published by grandchildren of Holocaust survivors and explores how the memory of the genocide is transmitted across generations.

Professor Remy Emmanuelle, Languages

Emmanuelle Remy is French and was born in the south of France. She grew up in the Paris region, Val d'Oise; however, she has remained faithful to her Occitan region where she loves to taste foie gras, cassoulet, pissaladière, croustade, etc. Originally, her studies and teaching were in health and social careers, at the University of Paris XIII and at the IUFM of Anthony. Her passion for teaching adults began when she was a young student at the University of Villetaneuse, Paris XIII, in Education Sciences. Upon her arrival in Los Angeles, she decided to teach the French language. She obtained her Master's degree in French at Cal State Los Angeles where she also taught for several years. Currently, she has been a French Instructor at PCC since 2010 and loves her classes and the French & Francophone club.

Professor Remy worked in summer camps for children in France and was also the assistant director of a program bringing a group of American students to France for the summer. She also taught a seven-week French immersion program with Middlebury College at Mill College. She is a firm believer in Languages. At home, her husband Tom and daughter Jade speak French. However, the household speaks three languages: French, English, and Chinese. Long live languages!
