Study for the summer in Granada, Spain!

Granada, home of Pasadena City College's Summer 2023 Study Abroad program, was the last stronghold of the Spanish Moors. Known as one of the most beautiful cities in southern Spain, Granada has it all -- stunning mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, artsy tapas bars, medieval Moorish architecture, and a thriving flamenco culture. Spend your summer learning Spanish and experience Granada's compelling Moorish legacy first-hand.

Explore Granada's unique culture with PCC Study Abroad! Visit the magnificent Alhambra palace complex; stroll the white-washed cobblestone streets of the Albaicín; submerge yourself in a hammam bathhouse; observe a spectacular flamenco performance in the caves of Sacromonte; and sample regional culinary delights at a tapas bar and tetería (tea house). Immerse yourself in the vibrant Andalusian culture of "the land of a thousand castles".

Transportation Package

Airfare for student participants is offered on a space-available basis. Airline tickets cannot be arranged for students enrolling after Thursday, April 6, 2023. Land-only packages, without airfare, may be offered to students accepted into the program after this date.

Tickets purchased from AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study) are exclusively on scheduled airlines (not charters). They are not endorsable to another carrier. Flights are not necessarily direct or non-stop, they cannot be re-routed, and frequent flyer miles are not applicable. Once airline tickets have been issued to students, they can only be changed directly with the issuing agent – agent and airline-imposed penalties apply. The AIFS Transportation Package includes round-trip ground transportation between the airport in Spain to your accommodations on the regularly scheduled program dates.

A minimum of 10 participants must take the group flight for it to be offered.

Program Refund Policy

If a student withdraws on or before Thursday, April 6, 2023, they will receive a refund for all fees paid less a $150 processing fee.

If a student withdraws after Thursday, April 6, 2023, but on or before Friday, May 5, 2023, they will receive a refund for all fees paid less the $450 deposit and any non-refundable deposits paid by the student or by AIFS on the student's behalf.

After Friday, May 5, 2023, the total program fee is due and no refund will be given.

This refund policy is necessary because the booking of transportation and facilities requires substantial non-refundable payments and commitments by AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study) in advance.

Courses

Professor Garson’s courses are designed to be complementary, enabling the students to make meaningful connections between the Spanish language and its civilization and culture. As a learning community, we will explore such places as The Alhambra, Granada’s exquisite Moorish castle, Sacromonte - where you may spontaneously see Flamenco dancing day or night, the majestic Royal Chapel - resting place of Los Reyes Católicos (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel), and the lush serene gardens of the Generallfe.

Through our exploration of language history and culture, students will actually live the Spanish language and culture everyday. While students are touring Granada’s unparalleled historical sites and soaking up art and architecture, they will also develop an understanding of contemporary Spanish life and perspectives. Still rooted in southern Spain’s marvelous history, we will see the interweaving of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths and how their presence affected what we see and hear today. In Spanish 42A, we will study some of the greatest works of Spanish history and visit many of the locations studied. This is an ideal way for students to connect with Spanish culture through exploring the city of Granada and also visiting other remarkable cities within Spain.
