Did you know that new state laws (Assembly Bill 1705) allow you to take fewer math classes at a community college?
If you need STEM Calculus, you will be able to jump right into Calculus I. That's right, no algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus required.
And if you need more support we have:
- Awesome Calculus tutors
- Dedicated Math study spaces
- Courses with extra help for Calculus (Math 105A/B)
- Calculus Achievement for Success (CAS) Program
- And more!
*And if you're planning on attending Pasadena City College (or even another less cool community college), you should still take an algebra-based math class your senior year so you can stay on track towards your STEM goals.
About AB-1705
A study from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that when students start in a transfer-level course, they have a better chance of successfully completing it — even if they do not pass on their first try.
Assembly Bill 705, which took effect in January 2018, required that a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year timeframe. In Fall 2019 PCC stopped offering any mathematics or statistics courses below transfer-level.
The latest legislation (AB 1705) goes even further. It aims to close equity gaps that still remain in access to and enrollment in transfer-level English and math in California community colleges. Students coming to California community colleges with the intent of a degree, certificate, or transfer must be placed into a transfer-level math course that satisfies the requirement for a student’s intended educational goal. The students who are most affected by this will be those who need Calculus.
PCC's Support and Resources
In response to AB-1705, the PCC Mathematics Division is currently:
- Updating our current placement practices to ensure correct placement for incoming students
- Designing support courses, for students enrolled in Calculus I and Calculus II
- These courses will provide students with extra support in the form of the active learning of precalculus topics needed to be successful in Calculus
- In our second year of our Calculus Achievement for Success (CAS) program, which has been showing promising results in the completion of Calculus.
This program provides students with extra support in the form of:
- A dedicated academic counselor
- Designated study space with tutors
- Career Workshops
- Class availability for CAS Students
- Ensuring that PCC’s abundance of other resources – success centers, tutoring services, success coaches, campus clubs, empowerment programs and others, are all working together to give our students the best chance of reaching their academic goals
