Kathy Kottaras presented two documents regarding the official School protocol for faculty and staff to respond to ICE should the need ever arise on campus. Kathy Kottaras also announced the Dream Center, as well as the various workshops and trainings being offered by Safe Zones over the next month for students who are affected by the recent cessation of DACA, as well as for faculty and staff so that they can support those students and create equitable classrooms.
Kris Pilon, committee member, as well as Alex Boekelheide, were present to help answer questions.
There was a question raised as to whether this document needed to be officially approved by the Board of Trustees.
On 9/12, the committee followed up to find out an answer to this question, and here offers the following response:
The protocol is not Board Policy, and is therefore not required to be formally approved by the board. In exercising his prerogative as Superintendent-President to address a matter of administrative process, Dr. Vurdien has decided that the engagement of this ad hoc committee and Police and College Safety is sufficient to ensure a protocol that will address the issue.
Moreover, Dr. Vurdien assured us that the college would absolutely stand behind faculty or staff who follow this protocol when engaging with federal immigration officials.
