Ad Hoc Committee for Affirming PCC as a Safe Learning Environment
Monday, May 8, 2017. 1-2pm, Conference Room G-1
Meeting with Alex Boekelheide, Executive Director, Strategic Communications & Marketing
Committee Members present: Cecilia Medina-Adamo, Yajaira De La Paz, Christopher West, Kathy Kottaras
1. Submitted and reviewed attached document with notes from the Ad Hoc Committee. Suggestions include clarification of terms, request for simple checklist, and contact with Campus Police to clarify their training/protocol for dealing with ICE specifically as well as judicial warrants in general.
2. Reviewed the Board-approved resolution, and committee members emphasized the immediate need for a Center space to support the vulnerable communities of undocumented students and LGBTQ+ students so as to ensure their success and completion.
3. Request for the office of the president to support efforts for the statewide policy that upholds these principles (specifically thru the California Values Act, SB-54, that is now being read in the Assembly) via an op-ed, letter to Assembly Member Chris Holden, and/or a statement with other community colleges.
4. Requested meeting with Dr. Vurdien to discuss a Center space. Received immediate reply:
Good afternoon Kathy,
I am happy to learn that everything is going well. I am not available at that time as I will be in interviews. However Dr. Storti should be able to meet with you as he is the one who will be able to identify a location that can be used as a center. I am copying him and his assistant. They will confirm a time for you to meet with him. Once more thank you. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
5. Depending on availability of Dr. Storti, next meeting TBD. Two options include Friday May 19, 9am-1pm, or Friday May 26, 9am-1pm. Kathy is waiting to hear back from Lissette (she's out of the office until Wednesday.)
Notes: Kathy contacted Jay Cho to upload minutes to Senate site, but there are technical difficulties (she’s being blocked by the system), and he is working on figuring out how to allow her access so that she can upload her notes ASAP.
Kathy also noticed that we have been calling our committee a few different things: Ad Hoc Committee for Affirming PCC as a Safe Learning Environment vs. Ad Hoc Committee for Undocumented Students. I wasn't sure if we had an official name already in place? If not, we should add this to the agenda for our next meeting.
