Dear members of our PCC family –

Thank you for visiting our site. As the Director of Student Equity, it is a privilege to work with the Safe Zone Coalition in supporting our LGBTQ and undocumented members of our campus community. These efforts are of the utmost importance given the continued undermining of transgender rights in our country, and the most recent assault on immigrant rights with the Sept. 5 announcement regarding the cessation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

I am writing this message on behalf of my colleagues in the Safe Zone Coalition and allies throughout campus to underscore President Vurdien’s statement of solidarity with undocumented students. As California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley wrote, the move to end DACA “is a heartless and senseless decision that goes against American ideals and basic human decency.” While we are deeply hurt as staff and faculty by this current state of affairs, we also understand that there are students and staff members whose livelihoods and quality of life are directly impacted by the termination of DACA.

We want you to know in the most direct terms – we’ve got your back. We care for you and your families, and we are working hard to sustain and create a rich mix of services that recognize and affirm the humanity of you and your loved ones. This site is your source for information on free resources available on campus and in our communities that will help you navigate this changing landscape. Please refer to these resources often, as we are constantly adding new workshops, trainings, and information that will help guide and sustain you. We are in the process of opening the Safe Zones Center in the R building, with an expected grand opening of mid-December 2017. In the meanwhile, please review our ever-expanding list of allies and look for the Safe Zone decal to connect with faculty, staff, and administration throughout our Colorado, Foothill, and Rosemead campuses who are committed to listening to you and supporting you.

We recognize and value the multiple strengths that you and your loved ones contribute to our country. Like you, we are here to stay and ready to walk alongside you on the path to reaching your educational goals.

In solidarity,
Dr. Michaela Mares-Tamayo
Director, Student Equity
