1st Annual 5 Days of STEM for GIRLS!
Our 5 Days of STEAM for GIRLS! is a week long summer academy for middle school girls (6th-9th grade). The program focuses on delivering engaging workshops in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) all within an empowering, supportive, and fun learning environment. The curriculum for the program is developed by PCC faculty with the assistance of college student mentors to support increased participation and access to women in STEAM related careers. Upward Bound Math Science Workshops
Upward Bound Math and Science is a program that supports first-generation and/or low-income students in high school with the skills needed to succeed in college and pursue a career in STEM. STEM at PCC is excited to partner up with Upward Bound Math and Science to provide students with hands-on STEM workshops for various Saturday academies, run by PCC faculty, staff, and student mentors.
Noche de Ciencias (Night of Science)
A community evening lead by SHPE (Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers) and supported by various STEM clubs at PCC invites K-12 students and their families on campus to engage in a host of STEM and college resource activities. (Un evento comunitario traído a usted por SHPE (Sociedad de Hispanos Profesionales Ingenieros) y promovido por varios grupos estudiantiles en STEM (Ciencias, Tecnología, Matemáticas, Ingeniera) invita a familias y estudiantes en el K-12 a participar en actividades divertidas y aprender sobre recursos para el colegio. )
Winter Tech Academy
Our Winter Tech Academy, held January 2018, was a week long academy for middle school students (6th to 8th grade). This program is the counterpart to our 5 DAYS of STEAM for GIRLS! academy that happens in the summer. The intensive and interactive academy focuses on applied project based curriculum intended to spark student’s interest in STEM. This year’s Winter Tech Academy is in collaboration with STEAM: CODERS, a nonprofit organization based in Pasadena that provides access to undeserved students and their families to STEAM fundamentals. Tech Savvy was a daylong conference sponsored by the National AAUW and designed to develop girls’ interest and confidence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines. The hands-on workshops covered a wide range of STEM topics. In addition to the workshops, the students participated in College Savvy sessions on the experience of applying for and attending college as well as, a Savvy Skills sessions on the “soft” skills needed to be a successful professional in the 21st century. There were also adult workshops for parents on how to support their daughters’ interests in STEM careers and college.
Latina Students attended various workshops presented by Latina professionals on education, careers, financial aid and personal development. They were also able to mingle with representatives from colleges, universities, community organizations, and private corporations. Keynote Speakers included Wendy Carrillo (California Assemblywoman, 51 st District) and Anabel Munoz (Reporter with ABC Eyewitness News)
Our STEM Saturday workshops were designed for students in grades 11 and 12. The hands-on workshops highlighting various STEM disciplines and applied concepts. Students who participated were also provided access to PCC's MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) center with available STEM tutoring by our PCC students.
