Guidance for Recording Class Sessions with ConferZoom

Recordings of live ConferZoom sessions are sometimes used to allow students to watch a missed class session, to review an earlier session, or shared with a future class. Depending on who is shown in the recording, they may constitute educational records that are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) — the federal student privacy law. @ONE's article, Guidance for Recording Class Sessions with ConferZoom, explains acceptable practices for utilizing instructional video and audio recordings.

How do I provide captions in ConferZoom?

Recorded Video and Automatic Transcription

If your video is being recorded for later access, you can let ConferZoom automatically transcribe the audio when you record to the cloud.  After the recording is processed and the transcript file is created, you have three options:

  • Display the transcript text within the video, similar to a closed caption display.
  • Open the text file in the chat window to read while viewing the recording.
  • Download the text file (.VTT format) to your desktop and share as a document.

For more information on automatic audio transcripts, including how to edit transcript text, see CCC Tech Connect: Audio Transcript.

Live Video

If you require live captioning in your meeting or class, you can submit a request for a live captionist provided by the CCC Technology Center.  Caption requests must be submitted a minimum of 5 business days in advance. For more information, see CCC Tech Connect: Live Closed Captions - How to Submit a Request.

Alternatively, ConferZoom has a feature where you can assign one of the participants to act as a live captionist and type what is verbally said, or you can type captions yourself.  For more information, see CCC Tech Connect: Closed Captions - Assign Caption Input.
