Major in Speech Communication
The Speech Communication Major is designed to prepare you to transfer and earn a bachelor degree in Speech Communication or Communication Studies. Beyond transfer, it will also give you the skills needed for several entry level positions within the field.
Major Requirements
To successfully major and earn an AA Degree in Speech Communication, you need to complete 18 units within the major with a "C" or better. Nine units must be completed in the required courses and nine units from the Speech Communication electives.
Suggested Course Sequence
Use the following sequence as guide to successfully complete the Speech Communications major within two years.
Year 1
- Speech 1: Fundamentals of Speech
- Speech 6: Argumentation and Debate
- Speech 10: Interpersonal Communication
Year 2
During the 2nd year of the program, choose an emphasis within Speech Communication. You only need to complete one emphasis sequence in order to fulfill your major requirements.
Emphasis: Performance
- Speech 5A: Competitive Speech
- Speech 5B: Forensics or Speech 3: Voice & Diction
- Speech 5A: Competitive Speech
- Speech 5B: Forensics
- Speech 8: Reader's Theater
Emphasis: Persuasion/Critical Thinking
- Speech 5A: Competitive Speech
- Speech 5B: Forensics
- Speech 5A: Competitive Speech
- Speech 5B: Forensics
- Speech 12: Argumentation & Critical Thinking
Emphasis: Business/Leadership
- Speech 9: Communication & Group Leadership
- Speech 12: Argumentation & Critical Thinking
