PROGRAM OVERVIEW

By incorporating a variety of scientific principles and case studies and performing various field projects, students will discover the fundamental principles of environmental science. These courses will blend together global and local perspectives in order to identify and understand environmental issues in developing countries.

Field and classroom activities will cover diverse topics such as: water and soil chemistry, habitat degradation and fragmentation, biodiversity estimates, reserve design and management, conservation issues, ethnobiology, ethnochemistry, agriculture, and restoration ecology. Field trips and classroom exercises will be conducted for 2 weeks at PCC prior to departure and for 2 weeks in Costa Rica by visiting many different environments and ecosystems.

FACULTY LEADERS

Paul E. Jarrell, Ph.D.
Dr. Jarrell is an Associate Professor of Biology and Program Coordinator for the Anatomy and Physiology program at Pasadena City College. He has been a full-time instructor at PCC since 1996, teaching classes in major’s and non-major’s General Biology, Environmental Science, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Field Biology. He has twice participated in Pasadena City College’s Study Abroad Program to Oxford, England: once as a Site Instructor and once as Program Coordinator. He loves introducing students to novel cultures and studying biology in a foreign setting. In his spare time, he is and avid fiddler of traditional music.

Professor Darcy Mack
Professor Darcy Mack is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Pasadena City College (PCC). As a full-time instructor at PCC she has taught introductory and both semesters of general chemistry. She has also taught biological, organic, and general chemistry at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. Professor Mack has participated in two different study abroad programs to Europe. She loves traveling and has traveled all over the world including Europe, Panama, Russia, China, and Turkey. In addition to her various travels, she has performed biochemical research for a chemical company in Munich, Germany, and spent a summer researching in a materials science lab at Northwestern University near Chicago, Illinois. As a teacher, she enjoys showing the real-world applications of science and looks forward to helping students see the connections between life, science, and the environment while in Costa Rica..
