A Note to ESL Instructors

At the beginning of each semester, please contact LAC staff for an orientation to the ESL Center and Learning Assistance Center.  Tamiya Cousins  conducts orientations for daytime classes, and Eileen Snyder  covers afternoon and evening classes.  You may also contact us to requst add forms for Civic 3033 to be placed in your box.

The civic course is a means of tracking students' work in the Learning Assistance Center or the ESL Center outside of class time for basic skills courses.  It is noncredit, costs nothing to the student, and has no extra work or grade involved.  The LAC will turn completed add forms in to Registration, and as soon as they have been processed, students can begin scanning in and out to use the Center.  Please remind your students to scan out so the total time for each visit will be recorded.

Please make use of our referral slips and recommended materials lists for each level of ESL (below).

Tutoring

The LAC offers the opportunity to meet in small groups with a tutor for practice in conversational English. Check the tutoring schedule link to the right (under Tutor Info, click General Education) for the times our ESL Conversation groups meet.

Online Resources for ESL

Many helpful resources are available via the Internet. Some of these are listed on our Useful Links page, and others appear on PCC's ESL site at pccESL.com.

DVDs and Videos with Closed Captioning or Subtitles

High-intermediate to advanced ESL students may benefit from viewing films and lectures with closed captioning.  Listening to spoken English and simultaneously reading captions can reinforce ESL students' comprehension and strengthen their language skills.

It is not necessary to be enrolled in a Telecourse to view the accompanying lessons.  For a list of courses with instructional DVDs/videos, see our Video/DVD Instruction link.
