PCC in the NewsNews: Author Joy DeGruy To Lecture On African-American “Healing” At PCC On Oct. 17
Joy DeGruy, assistant professor at Portland State University and author of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome,” will be giving a lecture titled “Understanding the Injury and Becoming the Healing” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 17 at The Forum at Pasadena City College. The event, sponsored by PCC's Ujima Program, will guide participants through a historical review of the oppression of African Americans in the United States. DeGruy will discuss how oppression was perpetuated by government policies, laws, and societal codes designed to keep African Americans powerless. “We have chosen PCC because it is a community college in a city that is working toward justice and equity,” said Bahia Overton of Joy DeGruy Publications. “Healing has to happen for African Americans on an individual, family, and community level. PCC is the perfect center for community members, students, and educators to come together and discuss how to create growth and progress in our community.” The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, as well as a book signing. Parking is available in Lot #5 for $2 and admission is $15. For more information, contact Chiara Thomas, Ujima Program coordinator, at (626) 585-7892.
