The ESL Center is a resource area on campus that currently enrolled ESL students can use to enhance their experience at Pasadena City College. The purpose of the ESL Center is to provide course-related assistance in an interactive study environment which supports ESL students in their langauge development and facilitates independent learning with the aim of improving student retention and success.
The ESL Center serves the following groups:
Trained tutors specialized in tutoring ESL students on grammar, writing and pronunciation are available for no more than 30 minutes per session. When looking at your compositions, tutors will be happy to offer advice on how to improve your writing, but they will not correct your papers for you. Click here to find out what the tutors' responsibilities are and what students' responsibilities are. Currently, no appointment is needed.
The ESL Center has a large selection of films and documentaries, textbooks in grammar, writing, listening and speaking for all levels, and language games for 2 or more students. The DVDs, textbooks and games are available for check-out and use in the ESL Center for up to 3 hours. There are also novels and non-fiction that students can check out and take home for two weeks.
Throughout the semester, workshops on a variety of topics will be offered. There is no limit on the number of workshops students can attend. Unless otherwise specified, workshops will be in the ESL Center D306. Workshops are first-come, first-served, so please come early to make sure you get a seat. Workshops are limited to 25 students.
During most Fall and Spring semesters, the ESL Center offers a unique experience where ESL students who are native speakers in one language are matched with native English speaking students who are studying that language.
Independent Language Learning plan
If you would like to use the ESL Center and your ESL instructor hasn't assigned it to the class, you need to fill out the Part 1-2 of the Independent Language Learning plan. The language improvement plan is designed for you use the ESL Center most efficiently and to help you make and reach your own language goals. Print this plan and bring it with Part 1-2 filled out to the ESL Center to meet with an ESL faculty member.
